N.B.: This post takes place just after the events of ’A Master By Any Other Name’.
Fire. It was all around him. Bright, burning; all-consuming. It gave life, & could take it away. It provided heat, warmth, & cooked the food that Humans enjoyed so much. It defended oneself & one’s home from invaders, & cast light into the blackest dark.
It was also a symbol of worship. In the sacred warm of the fire, he felt comfortable, safe; secure in the knowledge that the gods would watch over & protect him, as it was said in the great book. And yet there were doubts. Strange objects – he knew not what – buried in the ground here & there, the voices of unbelievers – small at first, but growing in numbers, only to be silenced once more – of pain & suffering, of death & rebirth. Like a phoenix from the ashes, he had been cleansed in the fire’s holy embrace & been reborn anew; with a higher purpose. He would seek out the infidels & the unbelievers, he would spread the gods fiery light until it covered all of creation, & he would offer them the choice of the true religion. Those that accepted, whom converted & came to realize the awesome might of THE[/u] gods would spared, their souls saved from eternal d**nation. Those whom abandoned the path & strayed too far to be saved, those whom would seek to stop the glory & greatness of the gods from being felt over all which they created, all over which they rightfully should rule; would die a most horrible death more certain & more permanent than the gods in the heavens above.
Looking down, he saw unassuming hands, the hands of peasant. Having worked & toiled for many years – all of his known life in fact – for the greater glory of the gods, he had lived his life as best he could; trying not to stray from the path. And now his life had led him to this moment. He was before his gods, & he was to be rewarded. Pleased with his progress along the path towards enlightenment, they had granted him an audience – amongst the highest of honors one could receive in life - & today was the beginning & end, today he was transformed.
As the gods took him into their loving embrace, at first he was afraid – for how could he comprehend being some much greater, so much more, so far beyond him that the mortal mind could not possibly conceive the greatest of their glory? – but his fears were quelled in an instant as they began to transform his body, his mind & his soul into a tool of their own making. Filled with their power, he became less than Human, & more than a man: he became an instrument of his gods, & came that much closer to enlightenment, that much closer to his gods.
The process was deceptively brief, yet profoundly & utterly life-changing, & when it was over – it had seemed as if an eternity had passed by, yet no more than a minute had gone by – he looked down at his hands again in wonder. Gone were the hands of a peasant, replaced by the strong, unyielding hands of man whom was not only certain of his place in the world, but was certain of his place in life. There was no more doubt, no more indecision, just pure, crystal clarity where once there had been none. Looking at the staff in his hands, he knew that it instantly belonged to him & him along, & that it was a gift from the gods, a tool - & if needs be a weapon – which he could use to bring the authority & message of the gods to believer & infidels alike.
Turning, he looked at himself in the mirror, a changed man, & looked at a reflection not his own. Doubt again crossed his face as he realized that this was not his body, that he was looking through the eyes, experiencing the life, of someone else, somewhere far, far away. Then, the divine light, the spark of the gods within him, washed away all indecision & all confusion; replacing it with the overriding & burning desire to carry out their will. Opening his mouth, he uttered the sacred words with new meaning, saying aloud the phrase he had been taught since birth, as a fiery skull swooped down behind him to consume all that stood in his way:
“Hallowed are the Orii”[/i]
Jonas woke with a start in his quarters at the SGC, sweating profusely. Looking about the spartan room assigned him since his return to Earth & his eventual re-assignment to SG-1, he noticed nothing was amiss & nothing was wrong. All was quite, calm & serene – a given at this time of the evening – all, it seemed, was as it should be. Next to, his partner, Kyanna Seer, stirred, roused by her boyfriends’ sudden & abrupt transition from the realms of sleep & dreams to that of the living.
“Bad dreams again?” She asked.
“Sort of” Jonas replied, his voice trailing off with his thoughts. “Go back to sleep”
“What’s up Jonas?” asked, “And don’t lie to me, I know you. Something’s not right, is it?”
“No” Jonas replied, sitting upright & swinging his legs over the side of the bed they shared together, his feet touching the harsh concrete floor, his skin feeling the tinge of bitter-sweet cold as the evening air caressed his body with it’s unyielding embrace. “I had a vision”
Kyanna gasped slightly in spite of herself, unable to believe what she was hearing. Finally, after many a moment’s silence, she dared to speak : “Are you certain?”
“My dreams have been getting more lucid, more vivid, ever since we came back to Earth & the SGC; but this one, I’m telling you , it was different.” He paused slightly before continuing his chain of thought, “It was like one of the visions I had shortly after Niriti altered my DNA in that Ancient gene-splicing device during one of her bizarre experiments that time she captured us on that planet”
“I thought you said that growth in your brain was the cause of your visions?” Kyanna asked.
“So did I. Dr. Fraiser & another surgeon removed it – well as much as could be safely removed – & as far as I was told, I was going to be OK. I was given a clean bill of health & everything” Jonas replied. “Insofar as I am aware, it shouldn’t be happening”
“But it is, isn’t Jonas?”
“Yes” Jonas replied, ashamed for Kyanna sake than his own. He knew what his visions – if they were visions – could mean for the SGC & it’s allies, especially now the Orii were intent on invading the Milkyway & either converting or killing everyone they encountered; not to mention the Wraith in the Pegasus Galaxy.
He also knew what it would do to their relationship & what an impact it could have on Kyanna. She was just starting to get used to living on Earth & operating with the SGC, & she of all people didn’t deserve nor need this kind of thing happening to her, not now, & probably not ever. She had already been possessed by a Goa’uuld once already, & if he could spare her the horrors of what was eventually coming their way, he would.
“It was so real – it was if I was there, like it was happening to me & not to someone else. It was as if I was living their life through their own eyes” Jonas said, closing his eye & then opening them again. He could still see the flames, even now. “I think - I least I think - I saw a peasant being turned into a Prior. The Orii were there, they enveloped him, changed him somehow. Made his less than Human, & more than a man”
“You OK Jonas?” Kyanna asked, worried, reaching over to caress her boyfriend lovingly, hugging softly in the way she knew he always liked.
“I will be, once I get some answers” Jonas replied, leaning back to kiss her quickly & return the hug briefly as he got up out of bed & got dressed into the SGC standard-issue coveralls which were issued to all on-base personnel. “I love you, get some sleep”
“Where are you going?” Kyanna asked, wondering what on Earth, Langara – or any other planet for that matter – would, symbiotes aside, possess him so.
“To go see Dr. Laim & speak with General Landry, I think I might know what’s causing this…” Jonas replied, as he rushed out the door & headed towards the infirmary.
A cat scan & a few examinations later, Jonas had his answer.
“It looks like the tumor Dr. Fraiser & her companion removed a few years ago isn’t completely gone” Dr. Caroline Laim stated, looking at the results with Jonas’ cat scan with him. “There was always a chance that they couldn’t remove the tumor in it’s entirety due to the location of tumor & how it was pressing on, & effecting, the rest of your brain”
“Does this mean I will need another operation?” Jonas asked. The thought of going through the whole process again terrified him, & the fear & apprehension he felt was plain as day on his face.
“I don’t think so” Dr. Laim replied, “It seems that somehow - & don’t ask me why, I am still getting used to all this crazy Stargate stuff myself – that the left-over matter from the tumor has integrated itself into the rest of your frontal lobe &, by extension, the rest of your brain. As far as I know, it is behaving like a normal brain grow would in the developmental years of a child. For the moment, it is not doing you any harm, other than these strange dreams - ”
“Visions” Jonas said.
“ – Sorry, visions – my mistake. Whatever they are, it seems to me that you are in otherwise perfect health for someone your age. Considering your prior exposure to naqaudrah on Langara, you are fine, all things considered” Dr. Laim stated, her medical opinion like a decree from god on high.
“So what you are saying is that I might get more of these visions, but that I am no foresseable & immediate danger?” Jonas asked.
“Yes” Dr. Laim replied, “Although I do want to keep an eye on that brain of yours, & want to run further tests to make sure you are not suffering any after-effects from dealing with naqaudrah; so I am scheduling you for regular check-up’s once a week, in addition to the standard medical tests conducted on SGC teams & gate personel”
“So long as this doesn’t become a problem. . .” Jonas replied, unsure of the future now he had been given this news.
“As I said before, you should be fine, all things considered, although you are[/b] going to coming in at least once a week – minimum once a fortnight – for regular check ups”
“Yes Dr. Laim” Jonas replied, getting up to leave.
“And Jonas?”
“Yes Dr. Laim?” Joans asked.
“Make sure Kyanna comes in for here regular check ups, she has been exposed to more naquadrah than you in a far shorter period, & considering the work she does, I want her in top form; especially given your latest medical report”
“Yes doctor, I’ll remind her” Jonas replied dutifully, knowing she was right; but also thinking that Dr. Janet Fraiser hadn’t been such a neo-Nazi when it came to routine medical work.
Leaving, Jonas made his way to the briefing room, where the rest of SG-1 & General Landry were waiting for him. Briefly, he summarized his dream-vision & gave them the findings of Dr. Caroline Laim’s medical report.
“Interesting” General Landry said after Jonas had finished his explaination.
“You sure you’re OK, Jonas?” Sam asked, both her & Daniel had been there with him when Niriti had performed her experiments on them all, & had subsequently been killed by one of her own creations.
“It’s still a lot to take in all at once” Jonas replied, “And considering how my visions generally turned out last time, I honestly don’t know what to make of it all”
Sam winced slightly at that comment. She had suffered a burn from a feedback spike in the power grid whilst she & Walter had been conducting a routine check of the Earth’s Stargate, a fate which Jonas had tried to prevent; but had only ended up inadvertently causing instead.
“You can see the future!” Cameron Mtchell, the teams newly-appointed leader, cried. “That is SO[/i] cool! Imagine the intel we could get on the Orii with that kind of an tactical advantage!”
“It doesn’t work like that” Jonas replied, & quickly added, rather sheepishly: “When it works at all. . .”
“Jonas, you do realize that Cameron is right in this regard – it really could help us fight the Orii & their followers if we knew what to expect” Daniel replied, “And this has got to be life-changing for you, wouldn’t?”
“Yes, & yes. I realize the potential benefits of having this – this gift – but I don’t want us to rely on it any more than we would a P90 or a staff weapon. I am still human, & at the end of the day; I am still fallible & flawed, just like everyone else is”
“May I suggest we discuss the potential benefits & pitfalls of Mr. Quinn’s…unique talents later. Right now, we need to discuss what this vision is you saw; Jonas?” General Landry interjected.
“I think – no, I am pretty sure now – that I saw the Orii creating a Prior” Jonas replied, “It was like I was looking through his eyes. I felt what he felt, I saw what he saw. It was all so real”
“Sounds a lot like the experience Vala & I had when we used the Ancient long-range communications device” Daniel said, nodding his agreement of Jonas’ assessment of how the situation felt. “It certainly matches the description close enough”
“Although this time, Jonas wasn’t attached to an Ancient long-range communications device, or any other devices that we know of” Carter added, pressing the point of difference between the two scenarios.
“Maybe it had something to do with his visions?” Mitchell piped up, adding in his two-cents worth. “After all, you did say in the initial report, Jonas, that you thought your visions at the time could be a result of genetic tampering to increase your alertness & perception?”
“Wow! Someone was reading. . .” Daniel added, Mitchell giving Daniel a weird look; not impressed with his joke.
“In any case, what I saw - it was like I was me, but I wasn’t. I was this other person, this peasant, or whatever you want to call him - & I witnessed, no, I felt[/i] the Orii changing him into something else; into a Prior. And I knew after the transformation was complete that I – he – was powerful, as in Hauk’Tarr kind of powerful. And it wasn’t just a feeling, it was an absolute, a knowing beyond any doubt that I was better than everyone else; like I’d be specifically chosen to fulfill a task only I could perform” Jonas stated, trying to impress upon all of them the intensity & profound sense of awe - & terror – he had felt during, & after, his vision.
“Could it have something to do with the ‘Day of Reckoning’ the Priors we have met have been harping on about?” Mitchell asked.
“It seems more than likely” Carter replied.
“I agree with Sam, it seems to be a portend of things to come, if you ask me”
“Great, gloom & doom all round; just call me Dr. Death!” Jonas replied sarcastically, rolling his eyes to empathize his point.
“Actually, we already have a Dr. Death. . .” Daniel said, getting a swift kick from Sam under the table. “Ouch!”
“In any event” General Landry said, grabbing everyone’s attention, “May I suggest, people, that we keep abreast of Mr. Quinn’s visions & take any results thereof with a grain or two of salt until we can weed out which one are more accurate than others. I also want you to keep practicing on perfecting your control of these visions of say you keep having Jonas, if we can reduce the possibility for error when you do have one, it may help us narrow down which issues to concentrate more on”
“Yes General” Jonas replied.
“I want a full report from each of you concerning this matter, included documented evidence for & against all phenomenon associated with seeing visions of the future”
“Actually it’s called ‘precognition, Sir” Daniel interjected.
“Thankyou Daniel” General Landry replied, the tone in his voice stating his was anything but, especially at being interrupted when issuing orders. “Until such time as this thing is sorted out, this meeting has been classified A-1 top secert”
“Isn’t the Stargate program classified A-1 top secret?” Mitchell asked, getting a glare from Landry.
“You are not to discuss this with anyone, not until we know more of what we’re dealing with. You have your order, you’re all dismissed” General Landry replied, ending the discuss then & there.
“Well” Mitchell said as they all got up to leave, “What do you know? I am glad we took you back after all!”
“Thanks, that makes me feel a whole lot better!” Jonas replied sourly.
“Visions of the future, heh?” Daniel added, “Bet this makes life really interesting, hey Jonas?”
“Yeah Jonas, what do you think we should do next? Any vision on how this thing with the Orii is going to end? Or maybe how we can help Atlantis handle the Wraith?”
“If I did, or do, you will be the first people I tell – besides Kyanna of course – but as to the long haul, as far as the Orii & the Wraith are concerned? I honestly wouldn’t have a clue. . .”
