The newly ousted SGC sends a new expedition to explore the Ida Galaxy, former home of the Asgard (runs concurrently with SG:U).
N.B.: This post takes place concurrently with the SGU post "Revival" & is set in mid-2014 A.D.
“What about all the technology they may have left lying around?”
“The Asgard were pretty thorough when they relocated their entire species to Orilla, their new home planet, after the war with the Replicators” stated, “As far as we anyone can tell, whatever technology they may have had left was destroyed when they committed mass suicide after the latest debacle trying to fix their cloning problem”
“We were all there, we remember” Daniel said, a small frown furrowing his features, a pang of sadness overcoming him at the loss of their friend Thor & the Asgard as a whole – a sentiment, it seemed by looking around the table, shared by the rest of SG-1.
“And besides, we have the Asgard Core now, they bequeathed us all their knowledge & technology to ensure their memory would live on” said.
“And it was that technology which gave us the edge we needed to finally beat the Orii” General Landry stated matter-of-factly.
“Which is why we have replicated that technology – like the Asgard beam weapon - & fitting it to all our Daedalus-class cruisers aboard the fleet. We are putting their technology to use right here, right now”
“And the Asgard core itself?” Landry asked.
“We're looking into making a duplicate copy should the original ever fail” Sam Said, “And with the core's help, we're literally recreating it piece by piece & assembling a back-up data core at Area 52, but it's slow going. The Asgard, as we all know, were highly advanced & it's an exacting process”
“Is that safe?” Mitchell asked, “Considering what happened last time”
“We have safe-guards in place – no more Replicators or things like that can be made without the proper authorisation - & the Replicators themselves can only be represented holographically; not recreated like when we were stuck in the Alterran Galaxy or on Atlantis” Same replied, “And the facility where we are building the second Asgard core is locked up tighter than Fort Nox, what with the anti-beam shielding, the Tok'Ra shields, the security checks in place...”
“Alright, we get the picture, Colonel, thank you” Landry replied, cutting her off before she drifted any further into technobable.
“Your welcome, Sir” Carter knew when she was being gently put in her place for the greater good of the team. She didn't mind, she has proven herself a capable leader & a valuable asset of SG-1 & the STARGATE Program as a whole; & everyone present knew it, too.
“You still have yet to explain to me why exploring the Asgard home galaxy is worthwhile or give me a compelling reason why I should take this further with the IOA” stated.
Mitchell looked like he was grating on his last nerve, Daniel look expariated & the rest of the team just stared at <INSERT NAME HER> incredulously. It was finally Vala that spoke up.
“The Lucian Alliance” She said.
“I beg your pardon, Ms. Mal Doran?? <INSERT NAME HERE> asked.
“The Lucian Alliance” Vala repeated, leaning forward to get everyone's attention. “Earth is officially at war with the Alliance. Think of it: a galaxy as yet-unexplored fully by Humans, which was known to be home to one of the most advanced alien races bare the Ancients, which was, until recently, quite inhabited. Do you think for an instant the Lucian Alliance would allow themselves to be deprived of a potential source of technology, minerals & the Ascended-knows-what other resources which might help them win the war & increase their stranglehold on this galaxy?”
“It is true that the Lucian Alliance is a source of much pain throughout the galaxy” Teal'c stated flatly in his atypical matter-of-fact tone. “The Jaffa High Council has to regularly assign patrols to several of our colony worlds to ensure that they remain free of Alliance influence & to guarantee the continued safety & prosperity of all Free Jaffa”
“Not to mention the shift in power it would cause should they gain additional technology & resources to continue their operations. They already have proven they pose a credible threat & can't be underestimated. Look at the attack they launched on Destiny, the bombing of Homeworld Command, their invasion of Earth, not to mention their latest round of attacks on numerous offworld bases” Sam added, hoping to add weight to the team's argument. “They are getting as bad as Gouuld were”
“And don't even get me started on kassa, or their fascination with leather uniforms...” Mitchell started, the others raising their eyebrows at him, Mitchell shooting them back a 'so what!' look.
“Need I remind you, <INSERT NAME HERE>, that Earth also has a diplomatic & moral duty to protect my homeworld from the predations of the Lucian Alliance?” Jonas, whom until now had been silent throughout the exchange, weighting up his options, pipped in. “If the Alliance were to gain an edge over Earth or it's allies & failed in it's duty to protect Langara from Lucian Alliance occupation, I would hate to think of what they would do with access to a Stargate that could dial anywhere – including the Ancient ship Destiny, Atlantis in the Pegasus Galaxy, or the Asgard home galaxy come to think of it – let alone how many bombs or other weapons of mass destruction they could make by mining all that naqaduria....”
“Besides the obvious benefits of exploration & furthering the interesting of Humanity, there is the potential to discover new resources, even leftover technology the Asgard may have missed in their hast to fix their cloning problem & bequeath us the core aboard the Odyssey – we've even built a ship just for that expression purpose : the Peary. It's worth the money, & the risk, Senator” Daniel finished, surmising the groups argument nicely.
“And what do you think of all this, General?” asked, looking over to General Landry.
“I think that the fine folks sitting at this table are national & international heroes – each & every one of them – in their own right, & that SG-1 has pulled our arses out of the fire far more times than we can count. I have learnt to trust their judgement, & my gut, & I am pleased to say that it normally turns out right most of the time” Landry said, getting smiles of approval & gratitude from SG-1.
“Thank you!” They cried, almost in unison.
“You guys have earnt it” Landry said.
“In spite of your faith in your team & their exempilary track record for the SGC in service to this planet, it's the 'most of the time' I am afraid of : what if somethin goes wrong?” <INSERT NAME> said, “And in my experience, it often does go wrong: the Goa'uuld, the Wraith, the Replicators, the Orii, & now the Alliance” - he held up a hand to stall any arguments before they started - “However, the people of this world owe you – owe you all – one, & you provide a compelling argument. I for one would never forgive myself if the Alliance got it hands on some leftover advanced Asgard tech & screwed us over. We have enough trouble with them as it is. I will take your case to Washington & submit your proposal to the IOA”
So syaing, he packed up his briefcase, gathered his things & left.
“Here's hoping they buy it...” Mitchell mumbled.
“They will” Sam replied, “The military benefits alone of a galaxy full of minerals to exploit is enormous”
“To to mention the little threat I laid out” Jonas.
“Well played, that one” Vala nodded her approval.
“Indeed” Teal'c added.
“Good work SG-1, dismissed” Landry said, leaving the briefing for his office & a much needed cup of coffee from the mess hall.
“Guess we we do now is wait...” Daniel said.
