Fierce & proud warriors, the Unas (a word which literally translates as ¡¥First¡¦) evolved from the same primordial waters which spawned the Goa¡¦uuld; & were their first hosts. Even when standing still, an Unas (pronounced ¡§Oo-nas¡¨) conveys an impression bestial ferocity & power. Standing 1.5 metres tall, an Unas is a born hunter, with the claws & instincts to match.Sleek, with a reptilian form & the body of a hunter, an Unas has a fine covering of interlocking scales that provide a modicum of natural protection. Most Humans (mistakenly) tend to find the Unas, with their fierce outwards appearance & primitive ways, to be little more than beasts.

An Unas has a natural curiosity, & suspicion of, things that are different. Whilst their innate curiosity can get them into trouble at time, their suspicious nature, & initial fear of, things that are different or unfamiliar to them helps stop them from getting killed outright; even if they do tend to come away with a few bumps & bruises. As a somewhat primitive & simplistic species, these traits, when combined with their warrior¡¦s skills & hunter¡¦s prowess; have helped them survive to the present day.
Unas face all challenges the same way : with courage, conviction & a passion for life. Honor is extremely important to the Unas, & plays a large part in their spiritual beliefs; the Unas feeling that by leading a good & virtuous life filled with valor & courage, coupled with a respect for the living world, will guarantee them a place in the afterlife.
Having said this, Unas can & will become aggressive, even at the best of times; & their moods are often unpredictable, with many Unas lashing out or getting anger at the slightest offense, seeing it as a tarnish to their name & their honor (& thereby diminishing their chances of having a happy afterlife). Indeed, staring intently (some would say glaring) at an Unas for too long can be indicative of a challenge; to which the Unas in question will retaliate with violence, until challenger or challenged submit or are killed. Although this seems a bit barbaric & confusing to some, particularly those are not familiar with Unas culture & etiquette, it makes perfect sense to the Unas; & they expect others to treat them with the same honor & respect they would show to them.

Progress Level 0 : Out of the Waters:
The early stages of evolution on P3X-888 give rise to the primitive Goa¡¦uuld & the Unas. The Unas control the land whilst the Goa¡¦uuld dominate the waters; with the occasional overconfident or unlucky Unas being possessed by the random Goa¡¦uuld symbiote.
Progress Level 1 : Hunter & the Hunted:
Some of the Goa¡¦uuld eventually evolve to include naqaduh in their blood, gaining in intelligence & cunning. Using Unas as hosts, they eventually learn to operate the stargate on their homeworld & leave to spread through the galaxy like a plague, scavenging technology & taking a variety of hosts along the way; taking Unas as slaves on other worlds on the odd occasion. The remaining Unas come to realise that the Goa¡¦uuld can possess the; & devise crude-yet-effective measures, such as wearing necklaces of sharpened bone fragments, in order to stop the Goa¡¦uuld from possessing them. The remaining primitive Goa¡¦uuld symbiotes, naqaduh absent from their bloodstream's, continue to prowl the lakes, streams & waters of P P3X-888.
Progress Level 2 : War & Peace:
The Unas whom remain on P3X-888 eventually run into the Humans of Earth, whom come to P3X-888 to study the fossilized remains of the primitive Goa¡¦uuld there. After some mishaps & misunderstandings, during which Daniel is abducted by the young Unas named Chakka & several members of the expedition team are possessed by primitive Goa¡¦uuld symbiotes; the Humans leave in peace, the primitive Goa¡¦uuld defeated (for now), the Unas befriended & Chakka taking on a new role as the Alpha Male of his tribe (SG-1 Season 4, ¡¥The First Ones¡¦).
Chakka & his tribe are later abducted by Humans from another world & used as slaves, until the arrival of SG-1, whereby Chakka leads an uprising; & a tenuous yet fragile peace is established between the two species (SG-1 Season 5, ¡¥Beast of Burden¡¦). Chakka is later called upon by the SGC to help meditate a dispute between the SGC & a planet full of Unas in order to obtain naqaduh for the SGC in their ongoing fight with the Goa¡¦uuld. The Unas continue to be a useful ally to the people of Earth, proving their courage, resourcefulness & honor in combat; proving that one does not have to wield high technology to be worthy respect. . . .

As an Unas matures, it¡¦s chin-horns & cranial ridges become more pronounced; & the Unas¡¦ skin colour may change with age, getting darker & more intense as they reach adulthood & beyond.
Family Life:[/i]
The Unas organise themselves into tribes. A typical tribe normally has one Alpha Male, one Beta Male, several warriors & a few females; whom tend to domestic duties & look after the young. Typically, a young Unas willl spend it¡¦s first couple of years with it¡¦s mother, interacting with other young juviniles until it reaches the age of puberty; whereby it is intiated into adulthood; most typically by undertaking a rite of passage, which can include such things as spiritual journey¡¦s into the wilderness (similar to a vision quest, or like-minded experience) & the like. Upon completion of this rite of passage ceremony, the Unas is offically considered an adult of the tribe.

The Unas language consists of a primitive dialect of over 50 sounds & gestures; many of which are based on instinctual responses common to primitive cultures of other planets, including Earth. Some common Unas phrases & gestures include, but are not limited to :
Achaka - An Unas greeting of respect. Aka - Thank you. Asek - Shirt. Benna ka cha - ¡§Retreat!¡¨ Han - Eat / food. Haya - Tribe. Lota - Wait. Onor - The Unas term for honor (said literally how it sounds). Honor forms an integral part of Unas society & spiritual belief. Ka - No. Ka keka - Literally ¡§No danger¡¨. In context, this could also mean to disarm, to leave danger behind. Kada - Naqauadah. Kanay - Friend / Clan member. Can also be used to describe an associate with whom one has a close relationship. Keka - Danger. Kekata - Weapons. Whether this term is used in relation specifcially to indicate Goa¡¦uuld weapons is still unknown. Kel - How / Why? Kel ka cha - Relocate / move. Kel ka naya - How many? Ko - Give. Ko keka te - Literally means ¡§To give death¡¨, synomous with the word ¡¥kill¡¦. Kor - Iron. Unas - The name the Unas give themselves (literally meaning ¡¥First¡¦ or ¡¥First Ones¡¦). Uman - The Unas term for a Human. Kakarr (pronounced ¡¥KA-car¡¦) - Death. Zo - Leadership. Used as term or sign of authority, or to indicate a position of power. For example, ¡§Kor Asek zo¡¨ would indicate that the Unas Warrior Kor Asek (who¡¦s name literally translates as ¡¥Iron Shirt¡¦) is in charge.

Unas do not have a rigidly-defined form of government like most cultures on other worlds. Unas are regularly organized into tribes, led by an Alpha Male (typically the eldest, strongest & most resourceful male of the tribe). Beta Males act like seconds-in-command, helping in the overall decisions of the tribe, & acting as tribal leader in the absence of the Alpha Male. Leadership challenges are quite common on some Unas worlds, with a younger, more viral male challenging the Alpha Male for leadership of the tribe.
Tribes typically keep to themselves, coming together only in times of great need, such as when fighting a common enemy (as they did in Season ¡¦s ¡¥Enemy Mine¡¦). In such circumstances, the various tribal leaders meet at a designated area neutral to all the tribes to discuss the situation; with the various tribal leaders consulting the members of their individual tribes before coming to a mutually-agreeable decision.
Unas laws are simple, & revolve around a strict honor code & standard of ethics based on the conduct of the individual & their place in the tribe. Whilst females are not necessarily considered second-class, their role is mainly a domestic one, & they do have some input into the goings-on of the tribe; particularly where family matters & infant members of the tribe are concerned, leaving the males to sort out the day-to-day duties of hunting for food, etc. So long as they are treated with dignity, honor & respect; they are generally a peaceable people until provoked or threatened, at which point they can become aggressive & violent if left unchecked.

The Unas have a surprising complex set of religious beliefs centering around the worship of spirits. Anything mysterious, strange & unfamiliar is a likely source of divine inspiration for an Unas; & they see the mystical in common everyday occurrences & items which many others may take for granted. The moon, in particular, seems to be a source of religious significance for the Unas, although the exact reasonings behind this belief is, as of yet, unknown. Ancestor worship is also common, & many tribes will have a sacred burial site specifically set aside for the burial & worship of the deceased; along with other various totem sites, many of which are used to commemorate great victories & the like.

As a simplistic & primitive people, the Unas know little of high technology or advanced concepts such as astrophysics or faster-than-light travel; & their technology reflects this. Clubs, axes, picks, hammers & the like are the Unas weapons of choice - although they frequently resort to tooth & claw - relying on courage, honor, cunning & brute strength to obtain a desired result. They can be taught to use more complex equipment such as modern mining tools & be trained in other basic concepts; but most Unas are too hide-bond by culture & tradition to overcome this limitation without ongoing intense support &/or outside interference.

The original homeworld of both the Unas & the Goa¡¦uuld, planet P3X-888, is home to small tribes of Unas & primitive Goa¡¦uuld symbiotes; whom stalk the murky lakes & rives of their world, laying in wait to possess unsuspecting Unas whom venture too near the water¡¦s edge.

A K'kaan (Near-Unas) helps SG-1 negoiate with a primitive tribe of Unas on another world. The K’Kaan are as hardy as their ancestors, but lack the claws found in most Unas populations (they do have large, tough nails, but trim them). They are, on average, smaller & weaker than other Unas, but still more powerful than Humans. They are neither more nor less intelligent than human beings, but their thought processes are more logical & ordered. This makes them good problem solvers, but poor innovators. Unlike normal Unas, K’Kaan are extraordinarily cooperative & community-orientated. They do not typically have the inquisitive nature or natural bravery characteristic of human beings, but a few have been known to break this mold. Such individuals are respected if their accomplishments benefit the group. But their methodologies are not admired. Though peaceful, K’kaan will fight with strength & bravery if called upon. They can be extraordinarily self-sacrificing when it is in the best interest of their community, however they personally define it, & they will fight vigorously against threats to the larger whole.
