Galar is a temperate world not unlike Earth, with much the same terrain & seasonal variations. The 3rd planet of the Galar System, Galar is 1/3rd larger than Earth, & orbits around it's sun, a primary yellow G-type star named Brol, once every 369 days. The seasons are slighter longer, due to Galar's more extended axel tilt, & it's nights are slightly longer (being 14 hours long). A typical Galarian day lasts approximately 25 standard Earth hours long. Galar is orbited by two moons, Sentrius (the larger), & Jalnar; both of which are visable from the surface most nights.

Galar is a Protected Planet, falling under the auspices of the now-defunct Asgard Protected Planets Treaty (of which worlds such as Earth & Chimmera formed apart). Faced with the threat of retaliation & retribution from the Asgard if Galar was ever invaded, the Goa'uuld System Lords left Galar well enough alone; not willing to risk the combined might of the Asgard fleet should they ever attempt to subjugate Galar & it's people.
As such, the Galarans were left to their own devices, & have since thrived & flourished under the protection of the Asgard, making incredible strides both technologically & socially; begin roughly 60 - 100 years ahead of Earth technologically speaking. During that time, the Galarans have developed a complex social network, with trade & infrastrcture interwoven with elegent, efficent & technlogically-advanced public transport systems which support thriving metropolis' of thinkers, artists & scientists.
Militaristically speaking, the Galarans have progressed in leaps & bounds, developing specific technologies to aide the military & exploration through the Stargate, which they uncovered some 95 years ago. Reverse-engineering of Goa'uuld artefacts has lead to hand pistols - a re-working of the Jaffa Staff Weapon - as well as the famed Galar memory device (developed by studying the the Goa'uuld ribbon device & reverse-engineering Tok'Ra memory recall technology); in addition to reverse-enginering various other artfacts for everyday use, including limited use of holographic technology & healing technology devleoped from Goa'uuld holographic devices & hand-held healing devices, amongst other reverse-engineered marvels.
For all their technological improvements, the vast majority of advanced technologies weilded by the Galar is strictly controlled by the military, with those technologies only deemed acceptable for public use ever disemminated to the general populace. The majority of Galarians know nothing of the Galaran Stargate or the wider universe, let alone the Galaran Stargate program - something which the military keeps tightly under wraps, much the same as the SGC on Earth.
The Galarans have, up until tecently, been lacking the means & technological know-how to travel inter-stellar distances by starship - something they have know is possible, but have been unable to figure out for all their advance science - making trade & diplomatic relations with Earth, trading their memory technology & other advancements for help constructing their own space fleet - a very attractive & lucrative business indeed.

The Galarans met SG-1 in 2004, at which time they made an alliance between Galar and Earth.
Galar was limited to the Stargates & offered the memory device to the Tau'ri in exchange for hyperdrive technology. This trade deal seemed to go well; until Colonel Mitchell was accused of murdering Dr. Reya Varrick - the Chief Scientist on the Galaran Memory Device Research Project - threatening ties with Earth in spite of Emissary Varta trying to convince the Galaran Cabinet to let Mitchell go, due to his diplomatic status.
However, Mitchell insisted that his memories be searched for the true murderer. After painstaking studying, it was discovered that it was Dr. Marell who was responsible, having been divorced from Varrick & covered up with memories. Dr. Marell later had his memory wiped & a new personality implanted over the top of his old one, in order to continue his research on the project.
In spite of this potentially diastereous set back; the Galarans have managed to repair their relationship with the SGC, & Galar regularly trades with Earth on a frequent basis, even having some of it's own Stargate personell from the Galaran Stargate Program accompany SGC teams on off-world missions.

The Galarans are one of the few cultures encountered by the SGC to have their own fully-functional Stargate Program set up specifically for the purpose of scientific advancement & exploration.
Whislt other species & various cultures often use the stargate networks for travel as well as trade (the complex trade networks between worlds in the Pegasus Galaxy being a prime example), the Galarans are the first example of an alien species or culutre actively pursing a Stargate Program of their own which is similar in function & design to that of Earth. As such, the Galarans have a dedicated facility specially-built for the purpose, which houses various research facilities, a military contingent, as well as the Galaran stargate & DHD.
