A technologically advanced & benevolent race of beings - looking very much like the Roswell greays of Earth UFO lore - the Asgard are a peaceful race whom have had ties to some of the galaxy's most advanced culutures; having once been apart of the a great alliance that included the Nox, the Furlings & the Ancients.
Considered by many to be Earth's greatest friend & ally, the Asgard have helped shape Earth's technological development & have been responsible for influencing Viking culture, giving rise to Norse mythology on many worlds throughout the Milkyway Galaxy.
They have enforced treaties with the Goa'uuld before their fall, & have appealed to Earth for assistance in helping combat their most dread enemy : the Replicators. Indeed, it is because of this assistance in defeating this enemy that the Asgard have extended the hand of friendship to Earth - formerly having denied Earth access to their technology & scientific advancements - proving that they are loyal to their word & can be trusted as friends & allies to be counted upon in times of need (such as the Battle of P3Y-229); & have helped the people of Earth on more than one occasion.
Following their mass suicide at the Tragedy of Orilla, they left their entire species' achievements - art, science, culture, history, technology & more - to the people of Earth; ensuring that whilst they might be gone, their legacy will still live on.
In 2009, it was discovered that a splinter group of Asgard, a Lost Tribe, called the Vanir, were hiding in the Pegasus Galaxy from the Wraith; having conducted unsanctioned experiments on Humans from worlds throughout Pegasus during the 100 Year War between the Ancients & the Wraith in order to help solve their species' cloning problem (of which they have made some progress).
Morally deaf & believing that 'the ends justifies the means', these rogue Asgard operate from their toxic homeworld in secret, conducting experiments on Humans - sometimes coming into contact with the Atlantis Expedition & their allies & friends, sometimes not - always living in fear of discovery of, & extermination from, the Wraith.
All in all, the Asgard make powerful allies, fearsome enemies, & true friends; having proven their mettle to ally & foe alike many a time over, a testimony that whilst the Asgard may be on the wane, they are certainly not to be counted out.
