One of the most technologically-advanced cultures of transplanted Humans to be encountered by the SGC since they first stepped through the Stargate; the Tollan have proved to be a somewhat cautious ally to the people of Earth.
First encountered on their original ecologically-ravaged homeworld of Tollan during the SGC's second year of opperation, a group of Tollan refugees took up residence in Stargate Command for a short duration - where Harry Maybourne & the N.I.D. tried to have they 'detained' in order to accquire their technological knowledge & expertise - only to be left short when the Tollan escaped with the help of the Nox & SG-1. Over the interveing years, the Tollan would have additional contact with Earth, first during the Traid (trial) of Skarra/Klorel & again when they were called to help aide in uncovering a Curia plot to supply advanced weapons of mass destruction to the rouge System Lord Anubis.
The Tollan possess many technologies of interest to Earth - including their formible ion cannons & phase-shifting technology - & technologocially speaking, are far beyound the advancement of the Goa'uuld. Indeed, they have demonstrated a remarkable ability to handle almost anything the Goa'uuld or other would-be aggressors could throw at them - a point demonstrated by blowing two Goa'uuld Hat'tak-class motherships out of orbit of their new homeworld of Tollana, destroying them utterly - that is; until Anubis came.
As a part-ascended being, he once had access to the knowledge of the ascened Ancients themselves : knowledge he used - along with technology captured from the Asgard - to force the Tollan to aide him in his quest for galactic domination. When the plot was uncovered - with alittle help from SG-1 & the Tollan Narim - & the weapons intended for Anubis destroyed, he ordered that Tollana & the Tollan pay the price of their refusial to acquisce : the complete & utter annihilation of their world.
The last the S.G.C. heard from the Tollan was a distress call from Narim, sent direct to the S.G.C. by a Tollan deep space relay satellite : their ships were being shot down & their world obliterated; never to be heard from again - or so the people of the Tau'ri thought. The truth, it seems, is much different.
Those ships which managed to escape the torrential bombardment from the Goa'uuld motherships in orbit fled for deep space, making for the few colony worlds the Tollan had established. Those few survivors left planet-side found themselves in a broken world; on the run & forced to scrounge an existence in caves & open terrain as their world was overrun by Anubis' Jaffa; intent on claiming the last secerts of the Tollan for their master.
With the help of the Tok'Ra, the Tollan managed to retake their world from the Anubis & his Jaffa; reclaiming their ravaged homewlord & starting to rebuild anew; renaming it New Tollana, in memory of those that had died during the diasters of Tollan & Tollana, & as a constant reminder that their world, their people, would never be the same again.
Since that time, they have re-established contact with the S.G.C. & other like-minded friendly species, building a netwrok of friends & allies upon which to depend & draw strength in times of weakness; ensuring that their world & their way of life is never threaten again.
Whilst still arrogant & aloof at times, the Tollan have since learnt - thanks to Anubis' devistating attack on their homeworld - survival may trump principle; & even though they are still hestitant to ammend or introduce new laws as far sharing the secerts of their advanced technology, they do allow minor exchanges & monitored use of their more impressive technolgies (such as Tollan fusion generators, ions cannons, their phase-shifting devices, etc) until a given race, society or culture can prove that will use what the Tollan give them with the utmost responsibility - a relatively small step in the right direction, but a step nonetheless. . .
