Once, the Goa'uuld were considered the scourge of the Milkyway Galaxy; having started from their humble beginnings in the waters of their homeworld (SGC desgination : P3X-888[/i]) to possessing the Unas, then Humans & other various species (although Humans would always remain their preferred hosts of choice), using their genetic memory & knowledge/technoogy found along the way to become the dominant species in our galaxy.
Then, things changed. During the Third Goa'uuld Dynasty, the System Lord faced perhaps their greatest challenge : the Earth's Stargate was unburied, & the people of the Tau'ri ventured out into the galaxy - becoming a thorn in the side of the Goa'uuld & earning the ire of the System Lords time & again - Anubius, once thought banished for all time, made himself & his intention known once more to his numerous enemies, the Jaffa - once loyal servants, warriors & priests of the Goa'uuld - rose up in rvolt against their masters; &, perhaps most significantly of all, the Milkyway Galaxy was invaded by the Replicators - scourge of the Asgard & Tau'ri alike - defeating the Goa'uuld, laying waste to their vast empires & bringing the reign of the System Lords to a close - only to be defeated by the Jaffa & the Tau'ri themselves - & changing the face fo the galaxy forever.
Since their defeat at the hands of the Replicators, the rebel Jaffa & the people of the Tau'ri, the Goa'uuld find themselves at a loss. There are now far fewer more slaves to worship them, no more Dynasties, no more Jaffa to do their bidding, & precious little hosts to take. Their strangle-hold of the galaxy finally crushed, their empires collapsed & their minions defeated; the Goa'uuld now find themselves a minority in the greater galaxy at large. Sure, there are a few loyal slaves & Jaffa whom still cling to the old ways & still worship their Goa'uuld masters as 'gods'; but these are few & far between, & the Goa'uuld have lost the lifestyle & privledges they have grown so accustomed to.
Now, the Goa'uuld must make do with what they have & struggle to survive - for a species used to having literally everything at their fingertips, this can be quite hard indeed! - forced into hiding or taking up jobs as traders, thieves, assassins, tech advisors & the like. Always scheming & plotting, they strike from the shadows, only to disappear just as quickly; hunted by the Tok'Ra & those they would of oppressed had curcumstances not changed so drastically in - at least what is, in their opinions - such a short span of time. Some Goa'uuld, such the former System Lord Baahl, & the Trust - rogue N.I.D. agents whom have been taken over as hosts for the Goa'uuld - still pose Earth & it's allies a serious, if not annoying, threat; although the Goa'uuld, for all intents & purposes, as a collective whole, have been well & truely defeated.
Into this power vaccum once occupied by the System Lords has come various new players - such as the Lucian Alliance, the Free Jaffa Nation, & the Orii - & many Goa'uuld find it hard pressed to maintain their accustomed lifestyles, let alone make plans for revenge or to re-take the galaxy they see as rightfully belonging to them. All in all, the Goa'uuld may be defeated, but they are far from gone : & if it's one thing all concerned have learnt, it is to never trust, nor count out, a Goa'uuld; because, some way, some how, they always manage to meddle in intergalactic affairs, whether others like it or not. . . .
